BUTTERFLIES

Kefalonia has 60 resident butterflies, some of which start to appear as early as January! They come in all shapes and sizes, from the tiny Blues, with a wing-span of just 10mm, to the impressive Swallowtails attaining 75mm over all wing-span. I have planted many flowering herbs and bushes in my garden to try and attract them, so I do not have to venture far to photograph them. When I do get out for a walk, the hedgerows and verges are full of flowers, and the countryside has lots of wild sage, thyme and chamomile. The nettles and especially brambles are not the nicest of plants to us humans, but to butterflies they provide nurseries, food and shelter.
