SCARCE SWALLOWTAIL

The scarce swallowtail is not scarce around here, in fact they are quite common here in the South of Kefalonia. They have 2 broods here with the first having a yellower appearance than the second brood which are very pale almost white. They have tiger like stripes of black with a hint of yellow and blue and orange spots on the rear of the hindwing. They also have long tails on the hindwings. As I mentioned, they are numerous around here but apparently, they are becoming rarer, which is a real shame as this is a stunning butterfly.

Their name was given to them a few hundred years ago by British lepidopterists (people who are into butterflies a little too much), as they were rare in Britain. It is found in rural areas as well as urban gardens and parks. I have seen this butterfly all over the South of Kefalonia.
