SILVER-STUDDED BLUE
This butterfly is named for the studs on the underside of the hindwings. The male's upper wings are blue with a dark border and the females are brown with a row of red spots. It is the under sides which are the more colourful, brown/grey with black spots and a row of orange spots with black centres. They have an overall wingspan of 30mm.
This is normally a heathland butterfly, loving heather and peat bogs. The silvery blue wings of the males contrasting beautifully against the heather. A damp spot on a gravel road is also a favourite spot for the males. In late afternoon, the adults often congregate to roost on sheltered bushes or grass tussocks.
I have mostly seen this butterfly on the fringes of coastal roads on Kefalonia.
