SOUTHERN WHITE ADMIRAL
Another beautiful butterfly with velvety black upper wings and chestnut brown under wings with white cells. Its overall wingspan is 62mm and it has a distinctive flight with sort periods of wing beats followed by long glides. Adults particularly like bramble flowers but the caterpillars are partial to honeysuckle.
This butterfly is territorial and will watch its territory from a high position with wings half open or patrol its area looking for intruders. The books tell me this butterfly likes sheltered woodland clearings, wooded river valleys and shrubby rocky slopes. I can only vouch for the last one, having seen them mainly above Poros beach on the rocky slopes leading up to the beach road.
