BLUE TIT
When you see this tit perching on a twig, I often think it should have been named a yellow tit. It is not until it takes to the skies that the blue wings become apparent. The blue tit looks like it has no neck and has a distinctive square shaped body, but it is still an attractive little bird and a favourite of mine. It has a white face with a black eye stripe and blue cap. The underparts are yellow with a narrow greyish-black central stripe on its belly. Their wings are blueish with bright blue on the coverts and wing bend. The female is similarly marked but with duller colours.
This bird is quite common all over lowland Kefalonia, preferring woodlands, olive groves, parks and of course your garden, especially if you have a feeding station. They will nest in holes in walls, trees and bird boxes, which they line with fragrant grasses, moss and fruit blossoms. Their flight is fast with whirring wings that sound like playing cards in the spokes of a bicycle wheel.
