COMMON FIELD GRASSHOPPER
The common field grasshoppers are mostly brown, but can show a large variation in colouration, being black, green, or even striped. The grasshoppers I photographed for this page were living in the sand dunes of Mouda beach and were mostly black and red. The green grasshoppers have plain forewings whereas the black and reds have mottled forewing patterns. The black grasshoppers grow up to about 20mm in length which is pretty standard for these grasshoppers.
All common field grasshoppers prefer dry habitats with plenty of grass. The grass length seems to dictate the abundance of these grasshoppers, and different species of field grasshopper prefer different length grasses, so as the grass length changes you could see different colourations of grasshopper. The common field grasshopper is exactly what it says on the tin, they are everywhere and as you walk through grassy areas you will see them jumping away from you.
