CONE-HEADED GRASSHOPPER
This strange looking beastie is also known as the nosed grasshopper or the long-headed grasshopper, but I have no idea why! The cone-headed grasshopper has a pointy cone shaped head. They can be light green or brown in colour and according to the reference books, grow to 40mm. Most of the individuals I have seen on Kefalonia, have been up to 60mm in length, it must be all that baclava.
Please be careful if you wish to handle these grasshoppers, as they have strong jaws which they use to chomp through stems and leaves and they will bite to defend themselves. There are a few different species of cone-heads, each having its own unique song. They live in weeds and tall grasses, where they are quite camouflaged, so you only really notice them when they venture onto the ground.
