GREEK ALGYROIDES

This is the smallest lizard on Kefalonia, only managing to attain 150mm in length. It is also the most secretive, being exceedingly difficult to spot. Males are brown to grey above with blackish sides containing cream and sometimes blue blotches. Females are smaller and an inconspicuous light brown.

They prefer shady and humid habitats, although they can also be found on ruins and dry-stone walls. They supposedly, are less likely to climb, than the Dalmatian algyroides, and can be seen foraging on the ground in the leaf litter. Saying that, they also like to bask on tree trunks!

Mating takes place between April and July, the female laying 4-8 eggs which hatch in July or August. Their diet is of small insects and other small invertebrates.
