HEDGEHOG

Hedgehogs are not native to Kefalonia, so they must have been introduced, sometime in the past. The hedgehog is covered in up to 6000 brown and white spines and grow to a length of 260mm (about 10.24 in). They have a tail, but this is a vestigial feature 25mm long. Hedgehogs are largely nocturnal and unfortunately, usually seen as roadkill. They have a hesitant gait, frequently stopping to smell the air. Hedgehogs hibernate through the winter but will wake at least once to move their nest sites.

Hedgehogs are insectivorous, but will eat earthworms, slugs, and snails as well as insects. They will also eat the eggs of ground nesting birds and occasionally carrion. Once hibernation is over, breeding commences. Gestation is 31 to 35 days, with the female alone raising the brood of 4 to 6 infants. The young are born blind with a covering of small spines. After 36 hours, the second overcoat of spines begin to sprout.

Sorry for the photo quality, this individual paid me a visit, while I was creating some shelving for a bar in Poros and I only had my phone with me.
