WILD HORSES

Back in the day, the Kefalonian villagers used to let their herds of horses, graze freely on the mountain side, so they did not have to feed them. Over the last century, some have been abandoned and have formed 2 herds which roam the area around mount Ainos. They are direct descendants of the horses used by Alexander the Great, which came from the Pindos mountains in North Eastern Greece.

Because of their isolation and the hard living conditions on the mountain, they have become smaller and hardier than the original horses and are now recognised as a pure breed. These horses are shy and nervous and will disappear into the trees at the slightest sight or smell of man. Coming across them by chance, and being down wind always helps.
