BLACK-WINGED STILT

A graceful and elegant bird, the black-winged stilt can often be seen in shallow marshland, although with its long red legs it can feed in deeper water than other waders. It has a 700mm wingspan and stands about 350mm high. It feeds mainly on insects and has a long black needle like beak with which to probe. Its wings are black above and below and when flying, the long red legs, often crossed, trail behind it.

I first met these beautiful birds on the salt lakes in Spain, but I was very happy to see them here on Kefalonia. Most marshy areas will support them, but I have mostly seen them at Livadi marshes.
