GREAT EGRET

What a bird! The same height as a grey heron, about 1m tall, with a 1.5m wingspan, but a more elegant bird with its very pronounced “s” shaped neck. The head is equipped with a long sharp yellow bill which turns black during the breeding season. Its legs are long and dark with dark feet and during the breeding season it produces long back feather plumes which it uses during courtship displays at the nest.

It is often spotted in flooded fields and in trees overlooking lakes or marshes. They nest in trees, bushes and reeds in small colonies. So far, I have only spotted them flying over Livadi marshes.
