GREENSHANK

A greenshank is the size of a pigeon, but with long, slim, greenish-grey legs. Its bill is long, grey at the base and slightly upturned. Its back is a dull, dark grey-brown, which is streaked blackish in the Summer. Its breast is a pale greyish, with the rest of the underside being mostly white.

As well as being a very elegant wader, this bird is very quick, dashing after fish in the shallows, with a great deal of splashing. The greenshank Winters in Africa so we only see it on migration, so Spring and Autumn are the times to look for it. It prefers lakesides and reservoirs, according to the reference books, but it must also like coastal lagoons and marshes as I have spotted it at Livadi.
