MUTE SWAN

Is there a more a more elegant bird than the mute swan? This bird exudes elegance and grace as it glides along a lake or lagoon. Unless it is a breeding pair, and then they can be extremely vicious in defending their territory. The mute swan is huge and white, with a reddish-orange bill with a large black facial knob. They have long curved necks and long pointed tails.

They are found mostly on lakes and reservoirs if there are reeds for nest building. They are common on water where there are people who feed them, and so may become semi-domesticated. They can also be found on marshes and even sheltered seacoasts. This bird was on the lagoon at Argostoli.
