SQUACCO HERON

A compact and stocky heron 500mm high with an 800mm wingspan. A buff colour, with a heavily streaked chest in Winter plumage changing to yellowy-ginger in Summer. The most defining part of the bird are its wings. When on the ground, the bird is quite inconspicuous, but when it takes flight the heron is transformed by its startlingly pure white wings.

It feeds mainly on fish and amphibians and it is not unusual to see them at very small water courses, even ditches. You will also find this bird around mashes and lakes which are heavily vegetated. They are common at Livadi marsh and I have seen them along the reed beds on the South coast beaches.
