GRASS SNAKE

The grass snake is also known as the ringed snake, due to the whitish-yellow collar behind its head. They are a medium sized snake, growing up to 2m long. They are typically olive-green, brown or grey above with rows of black spots on the back and a row of black bars on their sides. Their undersides are white or yellowish with bold, dark rectangular markings.

Grass snakes being water snakes are usually found in or around water, liking ponds, lakes, streams and marshes. They also can be found in lowland grassland, open woodlands and, if you are lucky, your garden. They can be seen during the day and at night, and feed mostly on amphibians, although they will take small fish if there is a lack of their usual food. Grass snakes will play dead when threatened, turning belly up with an open mouth and their tongue hanging out.
