COMMON SANDPIPER

I have included the common sandpiper in the seabird section, as I have only seen this bird at Katelios, along the beach. It is supposed to prefer fast flowing streams, lakes with pebbles or smooth grassy banks, at their edges and forested areas near water. They are the size of a thrush, with a shortish, straight bill and short pale legs. Their flight is distinctive, fast and low over the water, with characteristic, rapid, shallow wingbeats with downcurved wings. It also likes to bob up and down after landing and after every quick movement.

This bird, like many of the wading fraternity, winters in Africa, so we see it here on its migration North during April and May and during late Summer as it returns to the dark continent. Whilst here, it feeds on insects, marine worms and molluscs.
