SMALL TORTISESHELL

One of the most common British butterflies, it can be seen at any time of year, especially as it over winters as an adult butterfly and is often found hibernating in your shed or behind your curtains. 


Its caterpillars feed exclusively on stinging nettles. Orange wings with the front of the fore wing marked with 2 cream spots, 3 black spots and a white spot at the end. 


Both sexes are similar in colouration and they have an overall wingspan of 46mm.
