LUNDY PONIES

I’m afraid I don’t know much about the ponies, never being much of a fan. I was thrown from a race horse when I was a child and since then, have never really liked them.

Michael Williams in the Official Guide to Lundy states that Martin Coles Harman introduced 50 ponies to the island in 1928. They were New Forest mares which were bred with Welsh Mountain stallions. The Lundy Pony is now an officially registered breed.

To see the ponies is relatively easy. They roam between Quarter wall and Halfway wall. They normally congregate around Quarter wall gate.

If the weather is inclement, they will shelter at the Quarter wall cottages. You can get very close to the ponies as they are very tolerant of people. If you do put your hands near their mouths, please be warned that they can bite and I’m told it is very painful!
