GREY HERON
A common visitor to the island and can arrive at any time of year, but it is not everyone's favourite bird.
Gulls do not like herons. A clamour of screeching from the resident gulls heralds the arrival of a grey heron.
They will mercilessly mob it until it turns back to the mainland or turns inland away from the coast.
Their slow wing beats with drooping wings, its feet dangling behind and its size (over 1.5m wingspan), means it is easily recognizable.
I have usually seen them on the coast being mobbed, but on a walk with my wife, one sunny afternoon, she spotted a heron eyeing the fish in Quarry Pond. Luckily I had my camera.
