HOOPOE

This colourful bird occasionally forgets to stop in southern Europe on its way from Africa and sometimes lands on Lundy.

A hoopoe is spotted on Lundy, usually in Spring, and about once a year. A pink/buff bird with striking black and white striped wings and a black tipped pink crest which it raises when alarmed and as it lands.

With its long, slightly downward curved bill, this is an impressive bird. Again, I heard about this particular bird while working, so once I had finished, I grabbed my camera and headed for Hanmers, where it had been sighted.

I actually found it on the hairpin bend on the Beach road called the Battlements (for obvious reasons), and followed it trying to photograph it landing so I could capture the raised crest.
