WHEATEAR

I always looked forward to the arrival of the wheatears from Africa. As you walk up the main track on the island, they will skip ahead of you on fences or stone walls looking for insects.

As with a lot of birds, the male is the more splendid with a grey head and back, black wings and a striking rump which flashes at you as they flit ahead.

They also have a pinkish/buff chest, white eyebrows and a black eye stripe, Simone (my wife), referred to them as Zorro.

As I have already mentioned, you will find them on the main track, but I found you mostly find them on the West or East Sidelands, preferring the boulder strewn slopes.

They arrive on the island in April and you should see them up until November.
