ISLAND LIFE- PART TWO

As I mentioned in the first part of this blog series, we stayed in our cottage for the first two weeks without any furniture, but we brought over a double self-inflating blow-up bed.

We were met, on our arrival, by Vagelis who had project managed the renovation of our cottage. He brought a bottle of bubbly and a bouquet of flowers. I cut a plastic water bottle in half for a vase.

During my conversations with Vagelis in the weeks prior to us arriving, I had ordered via him a quantity of timber and OSB (sterling board), with which to build some large planters and to create a workshop in our shed. These materials were stacked in front of our cottage and with two old chairs we found, it became our table and chairs.

I guess the first two weeks were like a second honeymoon for us, with a new house, living in a new country and enjoying the sunny weather. Well, it would have been if it wasn’t for the bloody blow-up bed! It had a built-in pump, so you plugged it in and in a few minutes, it was nicely inflated. After a few hours, it was nicely deflated as there were three holes around the seam at the top. Sticking plasters don’t work, that’s all we had the first night.

I bought some duct tape and superglue from a local supermarket. That helps the bed stay up a little longer but causes a lovely whistling noise, and after a few hours your back is touching the floor. We would then blow up the bed for a few more hours comfort. Having ordered the bed on Lundy and now living on Kefalonia, there was not much we could do. After various attempts over the first week with combinations of glue and tape, with no success, we went to a local gift shop and bought two lilos. These lasted until our furniture and bed arrived.
