During our 3rd week on the island, one of the worst storms in years hit Kefalonia. An actual cyclone hit the Ionian islands. Apart from extremely heavy rain, we escaped with no damage. Unfortunately, others on the island were not so lucky, with mudslides, flooding and wind damage devastating towns and villages. A lot of businesses were ruined or badly damaged and after a covid disrupted summer, it was too much for many of them. Four months later and people are still trying to rebuild their lives.
This was not the sort of weather we expected when we came here. I have spent most of my life in the South West of England and I thought I knew about lots of rain. We were told that there is a lot of rain in the winter, which is why the island is so lush and green. When it rains, it is like a monsoon and can last for hours, even days. I am being very English now and talking about the weather, I apologize. The winter has not tainted my love for this island in the slightest, It is wonderful and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
As I am writing this, there is snow on the top of the mountain in front of our cottage. What was a stunning view, is now picturesque. Unfortunately, I can't go and explore it due to restrictions, but it is a pretty site.
