SKYLARK

One of the many joys on Lundy is to be out walking around the island on a sunny day with the songs of skylarks accompanying you.

With a brown back and wings, heavily streaked, a white belly and short blunt crest, the skylark being larger than the meadow pipit, can be identified by its angular wings, song and flight.

If you disturb one while walking, they burst up and then drop down a few metres away and hover over the ground, fluttering their wings. Their song as they climb steadily into the sky is beautiful, and they will stay in one spot singing at quite a height.

They are often quite difficult to spot in the sky, just their song giving them away. They can be found all over the plateau, but mostly north of Quarter Wall.

A few strong individuals brave the Winter but the breeding birds arrive in March and with migrants arriving later in the year can be seen easily until November.
