STONECHAT

A cracking little bird, a member of the thrush family and a firm favourite of Lundy. The males have black heads with a white patch on the sides of its neck and a beautiful orange breast.

The females have duller breasts and brown heads. It often perches on tops of bushes or fences and so is an excellent subject for photography.

They can be seen in most places on the island but I have seen more on the East coast. A walk along the Lower or Upper East path is a good place to start.

I have spent hours watching them on the Quarry Terrace next to the Heligoland bird trap, below the Time Keepers hut.

They are mostly on the island between Spring and late Autumn, but a few hardy birds stay through the winter.
