WREN

I did spend a lot of my days off, getting up early, walking up the island to a spot below Tibbets Point where I would wait for the peregrines to show up.

They were not always forthcoming! So, coffee in hand, listening to the seals singing and watching the sun emerge from the sea, I would be looked after by the wrens.

Their song is glorious and their quick inquisitive nature is adorable.

One of the smallest British birds, the wren is easily recognized, reddish brown back, pale buff breast, no neck and the short, vertically cocked tail.

They prefer dense vegetation and so are common anywhere on the south east of the island. You will also see them all around the East and West Sidelands, where they enjoy the cover of the numerous rocks, boulders and scree which litter the slopes.

They are present all year but can suffer in really cold winters due to the lack of insects, their main diet.
